After nearly six days on the lam, Shug the zebra has been safely captured after her daring escape in Washington state. The spirited equine made a break for freedom on April 28th while her human paused on Interstate 90 near North Bend to address a trailer issue. Alongside three companions, Shug bolted into the foothills of the Cascades, sparking a community-wide search that turned into something of a local legend.
Despite the prompt retrieval of her companions, Shug remained at large, becoming the subject of numerous sightings and even inspiring makeshift zebra-hunting signs. North Bend resident Patrick Murphy likened the pursuit to hunting for Bigfoot, remarking humorously that “It’s kind of like the local Bigfoot now. I hope they catch [her] but you know, the zebra might live in the hills forever, in our hearts…You don’t find the zebra. The zebra finds you.”
But on Friday evening, Shug’s escapades came to an end when a group of determined civilians and animal control officers successfully captured her. The Regional Animal Services of King County (Raskc) confirmed her rescue, noting that she appeared to be in good health. The organization expressed gratitude to the multitude of partners and residents who aided in the search, signaling a community effort that rallied to ensure Shug’s safe return.
