Senior Citizens Host Senior Pet Adoption Event

This August, Waltonwood senior living communities are shining a spotlight on the special bond between senior citizens and older pets through their “Seniors Helping Seniors” initiative. These events, held across various Waltonwood locations, aim to help senior animals from local rescues find loving homes where they can enjoy their golden years in comfort and companionship.

As part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters adoption campaign, which runs through September 10, Waltonwood residents have taken an active role in supporting senior pets. The company, known for its pet-friendly communities, is not only giving these older animals a second chance at happiness but is also covering their adoption fees to remove financial barriers for potential adopters.

A recent event at Waltonwood Royal Oak in Michigan saw residents connect with senior pets from the Michigan Animal Rescue League, leading to several successful adoptions. Residents also contributed by crafting blankets and toys for the rescue animals, ensuring that these pets receive a warm welcome into their new homes.

Across all Waltonwood communities, residents have made over 1,000 homemade pet treats, more than 2,000 toys, and 200 blankets, demonstrating their dedication to the cause. Waltonwood’s motivation stems from the knowledge that senior animals often face longer stays in shelters and lower adoption rates, with only about 25% finding homes each year.

Waltonwood recognizes the parallels between the challenges faced by senior animals and senior citizens. Both groups are often unfairly stereotyped as inactive or unable to form new relationships. However, Waltonwood has seen that seniors make wonderful pet parents.
