Queen Camilla’s recent commitment to cease purchasing new fur garments has been met with applause from Animal rights activists. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) received confirmation from Buckingham Palace, expressing the Queen’s resolve against acquiring new fur products. Ingrid Newkirk, Peta’s managing director, praised the decision, emphasizing that it aligns with contemporary British values.

This decision follows Queen Elizabeth II’s similar stance in 2019, indicating a progressive shift within the monarchy towards more ethical choices in fashion. Wendy Higgins from Humane Society International also supported the move, noting that faux fur better reflects the sentiments of the British public.

However, not everyone agrees. Mark Oaten of the International Fur Federation argued for the right to choose one’s attire, highlighting that many people prefer natural fur for its sustainability over plastic-based alternatives.

Queen Camilla’s decision is part of a broader trend in the royal family towards animal welfare. Recent royal practices have included the use of animal-free anointing oil in coronation services, the exclusion of foie gras from royal menus, and the adoption of paper instead of parchment for official documents. Additionally, the debate over the use of real fur in the King’s Guard bearskin caps remains ongoing, with the Ministry of Defence defending its use from legal and licensed hunts.
