Grown-up ostrich chicks live in a separate enclosure from the adults at Highgate Ostrich Show Farm in Oudtshoorn. South Africa

After a recent avian flu outbreak at a British Columbia ostrich farm, the government ordered the culling of at least 400 birds — victims of an industry that forces wild animals into cramped, unnatural conditions. Though a Canadian court has temporarily halted the cull, the deeper issue remains: ostrich farming itself is inherently cruel and unnecessary.

Ostriches are farmed across North America for meat, leather, feathers, and oils, all for profit in the fashion and cosmetics industries. These intelligent, sentient animals endure suffering for products that already have ethical, plant-based alternatives. Keeping them in captivity also fuels the spread of zoonotic diseases like avian flu — a direct threat to both animal and human health.

It’s time to end this outdated practice. Sign the petition now to urge the Canadian Parliament to ban ostrich farming and Support cruelty-free industries instead.
