Marvel was saved with 64 other mini horses from being sent to slaughter in Oklahoma. Thanks to Little Hooves Rescue, all the horses found new homes. Marvel was one of the last ones left, and The Gentle Barn was so grateful to take him home and give him the life he deserves. The other horses and donkeys at the sanctuary were so excited when he first arrived and rushed over to greet their new friend.

Marvel, also nicknamed the Unicorn, is having the time of his life at The Gentle Barn sanctuary! He had never had a bed this soft and comfy before and looked forward to all of his yummy carrot treats and loving back scratches. Since arriving at the sanctuary in California, he has also made a new best friend! He and Addison the donkey have been practically inseparable since they laid eyes on each other. They’re roommates, they enjoy eating their meals together, and playing with each other every day in their backyard.

More than 100,000 horses—pets, show and race horses, carriage horses, and wild horses—end up in slaughterhouses every year, says the Humane Society. Horse rescue groups go to auctions literally to bid for the life of horses against “kill buyers.” Kill buyers look at horses and don’t see pets or individuals; they see meat. After a horse is bought by a kill buyer, she is shipped to a slaughterhouse in Mexico or Canada, adds the Humane Society.
Marvel and the other 64 mini horses from Oklahoma are all examples of success in the battle against the cruel slaughter industry. They are the lucky ones that were given a new start thanks to kind people. You can make a difference and support your local equine rescues and sanctuaries. Be a voice for the voiceless.
