This injured bunny was anonymously abandoned on Zeb Ernest’s front door without any note. Since nobody came by to claim him, Ernest took the poor guy into his home and decided to do everything he could to help. Ernest suspects that his previous owners bought the bunny as a pet during Easter and then decided that they no longer wanted the responsibility of taking care of him. Abandoning a pet outside to fend for itself is one of the cruelest things you can do to an animal. For this bunny, it was not easy surviving all on his own.

Sadly, he developed a fly infestation and would have died if Ernest hadn’t found him in time. At the vet, the poor boy had to endure a painful extraction to get them out. In an update TikTok video, Ernest announced that the bunny has been to multiple vet visits and his bot fly wounds are almost closed! In time, his fur will regrow, Ernest added.

Despite being treated so poorly, the bunny is as gentle as can be and has bonded with his rescuer. “I would say he’s a happy little guy. He walks up to me every time. He likes to lay across my chest. I’m personally amazed at what a good little pet he is considering everything he’s been through,” Ernest said.

Every year in the U.S., in the weeks after Easter, thousands of unwanted baby rabbits and chicks are dropped off at animal shelters or worse — dumped out in the wild to fend for themselves. Why? Because parents thought it was a good idea to give their child a pet they know nothing about, and the child has grown disinterested. Most of these animals are purchased on a whim from pet stores or breeders when parents see how cute they are. These are fragile, living creatures and are not toys. The next time you’re thinking about gifting someone an animal as a gift, definitely reconsider. You don’t want to be a part of the problem!
