Dog Detects Something Wrong, Alerts Human

Cecy Gallegos-Staats from California shared a compelling story about her Chihuahua-Maltese mix, Buddy, who played a pivotal role in her cancer journey. In November 2022, Gallegos-Staats was diagnosed with lobular carcinoma, a common form of breast cancer. Remarkably, Buddy seemed to sense something was wrong long before she received a formal diagnosis.

Gallegos-Staats, now 48, noticed changes in her breast earlier that year and requested a mammogram in April. The results indicated dense tissue, and she was advised to wait a year before rechecking. However, Buddy’s behavior suggested otherwise. He displayed signs of unusual sadness and would rest his head on her lap, even sniffing her breast. “It was as if he sensed my illness before I fully understood it myself,” she recounted.

Despite medical advice, Gallegos-Staats decided not to wait. She scheduled additional mammograms in July and October, which revealed abnormalities. These findings led to a biopsy, confirming her cancer diagnosis in November. “The changes extended into my breast tissue, and the biopsy confirmed it was cancer,” she explained.

Gallegos-Staats took to TikTok to share her experience, urging pet parents to be attentive to their animals’ behavior. Her video, featuring Buddy’s sad expression, resonated widely, garnering over 65,000 views. She believes pets might detect illnesses in ways humans cannot and encourages others to trust their instincts and not dismiss their health concerns.
