Japan allegedly plans to kill nearly 450 whales this season, including threatened fin whales and sei whales, purely for commercial gain. After abandoning the International Whaling Commission in 1986, Japan continued what conservationists call one of the most brutal wildlife practices still operating today. These animals are chased, harpooned, and stripped for meat that fewer and fewer Japanese citizens even consume.
Whale populations were nearly wiped out across the 19th and 20th centuries. Conservation efforts slowly rebuilt those numbers, but Japan’s quotas now threaten that progress again. Fin whales remain listed as threatened under the IUCN. Add your name to demand Minister Suzuki rejoin the IWC and end this industry today, because no economic justification outweighs a species survival.
