Canelo, a charming canine with a heartwarming rescue story, has captured the title of Newsweek’s Pet of the Week. Hailing from Louisiana, Canelo found his forever home in New York with human Evelin Portillo, who welcomed him into their family with open arms from the North Shore Animal League.
Described as having a “seriously friendly personality,” Canelo’s joyous demeanor brightens the days of everyone he meets. “When we take him for walks, he thinks he is going to be pet by everyone he encounters,” Portillo shared. Canelo’s love for praise surpasses even his affection for food, making him a delightful companion whose rewards are endless.
Portillo, reflecting on their journey with Canelo, fondly recalled the lessons learned from their previous dog, who graced their family with 15 years of love and laughter. Now, Canelo continues the legacy, spreading happiness wherever he goes.
While Canelo shines as the winner, other remarkable pets stood out as finalists. Scottie, a bulldog from Alabama, overcame physical challenges with surgery and now revels in a life filled with play and joy. Cookie the Cat, a beloved companion to teacher Aurora Freeman, became a surprise guest in virtual classrooms during the pandemic, bringing smiles to students’ faces amidst challenging times. Lastly, Lewis, a rescue dog from Ohio, found solace in a loving home after a stint in the shelter, embodying the transformative power of adoption.
