Sound the alarm! Trader Joe’s recently added maca powder to its product line-up! What’s so exciting about this is that the price of maca powder can often run a little high, making it hard for a lot of us to purchase it, even as a special treat. Thankfully, TJ’s is selling an eight-ounce pouch of maca powder for just $4.99, which means we’re foreseeing a lot of superfood-infused smoothies in our future. Read on to learn more about what the big deal is about maca powder.

Maca Powder and Its Benefits

Maca is a root vegetable that looks similar to a radish that has been cultivated in the mountains of Peru and Bolivia for thousands of years. As a superfood, maca is a great source of vitamins B, E, and E, as well as zinc, calcium, iron, and amino acids. It may also be a good supplement for those experiencing anemia and cardiovascular problems.

Also known as “Peruvian ginseng,” maca has been known to boost strength and stamina. It is also, ahem, reportedly great for your love life, as it also supposedly increases your libido. For those with a menstrual cycle, maca has also been known to alleviate cramps and the unpleasant symptoms of menopause.

In terms of flavor, maca has been described as having a strong, nutty flavor with undertones of earthiness and butterscotch. Maca powder is a great addition to smoothies, baked goods, and raw desserts.
