Tabitha Brown Shares How She Celebrates a Vegan Thanksgiving at Home

Thanksgiving Celebration Traditional Dinner Setting

Who says a vegan Thanksgiving can’t be just as good and better than a normal Thanksgiving? In an Interview with Tasting Table, Tabitha Brown explained what a vegan Thanksgiving looks like at her house and shared some great plant-based dishes that she and her family are going to dive into this year.

Brown says that the tantalizing sights and smells that come from her kitchen on Thanksgiving day would have anyone fooled.

“At my house, vegan Thanksgiving, you don’t know it’s vegan,” she told Tasting Table.

“All of the things that you have at a traditional Thanksgiving. They’re going to still be on my table, other than the turkey … The only thing is you don’t see a big turkey,” said Brown.

She did say that sometimes they do a tofurky, of which there are numerous options.

“I’ll do a [vegan] meatloaf, or I’ll do mushrooms and gravy,” she said.

Brown’s favorite, however, is the comforting side dishes. Think yams, collard greens, stuffing, etc.!

“I’ll still have my yams … Everybody eats candied yams for Thanksgiving, so you have those,” she said. “I’ll still have my greens … I love kale, and we like collard greens as well,” Brown added. “I’ll have my potato salad, the cranberry sauce, the stuffing.”

And, of course, she says that the meal couldn’t be complete without her famous mac and cheese.

“Everybody in the South has to have a good mac and cheese at the holidays,” she told Tasting Table. “For a vegan mac and cheese, you have to make sure you have your oat milk, or your cashew milk, and then your vegan cheese,” to make sure that it is thick and creamy, she said. She also shared a secret tip, which is to add butternut squash for a little sweetness.

“That’s also giving you very Thanksgiving feels,” she said.
