There is far too much research out there detailing the benefits of plant-based eating for our health and the planet to ignore. Consumers are interested in buying more eco-friendly products, and they want to eat healthier. That’s why even big companies like Nestle and Tyson have been embracing consumers’ interest in plant-based foods rather than denying the truth. There is constantly a new study showing why meat or dairy are bad for us. In recent studies, dairy has been linked to both prostate cancer and breast cancer.
Many people would simply rather ditch dairy than risk their health and wellbeing. And it shows — the largest milk producer in the United States recently had to file for bankruptcy due to the decline in milk consumption. Now Nestle, one of the largest companies in the world, has sold their $4 billion ice cream business (which includes Häagen-Dazs and Drumstick) because consumers are more interested in healthier options!
Business analysts speculate that Nestle may be ditching the ice cream business entirely. As Barron’s reports: “Mark Schneider, Nestlé chief executive, has been restructuring the group’s portfolio as consumer tastes shift toward healthy and convenient products and the growth of some of its more traditional lines slows.” They also explain that the ice cream business’ market share in the United States fell from 19.3 percent in 2010 to 15 percent in 2018.
Ice cream isn’t the only “unhealthy” business that Nestle has been parting ways with, though. They sold their U.S. candy business and are shopping their cold cuts and meat-based products unit. These also point to a shift toward a healthier direction. Studies have found that eating meat can increase risk of death from certain diseases and sugar intake has been found to impair memory and learning ability.
With pressure from consumers and the undeniable reality of the planet, Nestle could very likely be moving in a more eco-friendly and healthy direction. Hopefully, it will lead to a change in practices and production, and an increase of plant-based foods!
