Make Your Own Vegan, Palm Oil-Free Nutella!

Make Your Own Vegan, Palm Oil-Free Nutella! with hazelnuts

If there’s one thing we find ourselves constantly wishing we had on hand, it’s vegan Nutella. Is there anything more comforting than coming home after a long day of work and spreading a pat of chocolatey, hazelnutty, creamy Nutella on a piece of toast and cozying up to your favorite show? In fact, in the past we’ve even been known to eat a spoonful or two straight from the jar.

Unfortunately, Nutella is not suitable for anyone on a plant-based diet. Not only does it contain “non-fat dairy milk solids”, but it contains palm oil, which is responsible for the environmental destruction of Sumatra’s rainforests, and has been linked to many other environmental, animal, and human rights violations.

Luckily, our Food Monster App is brimming with talented bloggers who have come up with on-the-nose recipes for all your favorite traditional treats. We’re giving a shout-out to Karielyn Tillman, because she has a six-ingredient vegan ‘Nutella’ Spread recipe that is out of this world good, and we’re sharing it with you below.

Vegan Nutella Spread for all!

First, you’ll need raw hazelnuts, organic vanilla extract, raw cacao powder, maple syrup, coconut oil, and homemade almond milk to make this recipe. Just six ingredients!

Karielyn simply put the raw hazelnuts in a glass 8×8-inch baking dish and roasted them at 400°F for approximately 10 minutes (they will burn if you keep them in longer than that). Then, after allowing the roasted hazelnuts to cool completely, she used her fingers to peel off the skins of hazelnuts (you don’t have to get them all perfect). Next, she added all the ingredients into a high-powered blender (adding the hazelnuts last) and blended them until smooth and creamy. Finally, she stored in an air-tight glass container. Enjoy!

We also highly recommend downloading our Food Monster App, which is available for both Android and iPhone, and can also be found on Instagram and Facebook. The app has more than 8,000 plant-based, allergy-friendly recipes, and subscribers gain access to ten new recipes per day. Check it out!

    1. It is horrendous for the environment in terms of biodiversity. Companies are removing massive areas of rainforest to plant trees for palm oil so other species of plants and the animals that rely on them for survival are going extinct.
