A wildlife center in Virginia has found a creative solution to prevent abandoned newborn animals, particularly foxes, from imprinting on humans. By donning a giant fox mask while feeding the young creatures, the center aims to ensure their successful rehabilitation into the wild.
The Richmond Wildlife Center recently gained attention for a video showcasing its unique method. In the footage, a caregiver wearing a fox mask tenderly feeds a palm-sized, squirming fox kit with a tube. While it may seem peculiar at first, this unconventional approach is grounded in an understanding of the delicate needs of young animals found vulnerable in the wild.
The center’s objective is clear: they want the first images imprinted on the young fox’s mind to be of its own species, even in the absence of adult foxes or siblings. Recognizing the critical importance of this early conditioning, the center took to social media to appeal for donations, specifically requesting a “fox head mask” to facilitate the process before the kit’s eyes opened fully.
Imprinting on humans poses significant risks for young animals, potentially hindering their ability to acquire essential survival skills. By becoming too comfortable around humans, these animals may inadvertently expose themselves to danger, such as wandering on roads or falling victim to traps. Therefore, the use of species-specific masks or protective gear is paramount in ensuring that the animals maintain a healthy fear of humans and develop the necessary instincts for life in the wild.
However, the center’s journey with the fox kit also sheds light on the challenges faced by wildlife rehabilitators. Mistaken identity and improper handling, as evidenced by the initial assumption that the fox kit was a kitten, can lead to potential health risks such as exposure to rabies. The center emphasizes the need for appropriate protective measures when interacting with any mammal.
