Over the last couple of weeks, TikTok user @jasmine.vink, a trained and vaccinated rehabilitator, has rescued a large number of flying foxes suffering from paralysis syndrome. These bats are found hanging low on the ground, unable to feed or fly.

Jasmine says that the cause of this paralysis syndrome is still unknown, but it’s most likely to be related to a pollutant or toxin. Once brought back to the rehabilitation center, the bats are given intensive care and fluid therapy in order to make a recovery. Jasmine has been successfully treating bats that will ultimately be released once they regain their strength.

While the paralysis event occurring in South East Queensland does not have a definite cause, investigations will take place this year and will focus on the possibility of a plant or fungal toxin, including testing of fecal samples from affected bats, says Wildlife Health Australia. The paralysis is causing an inability to blink and respiratory distress in these poor flying foxes.

If you see any unusual signs of disease or deaths in wildlife you can report it to:

The 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline at 1800 675 888, or your local veterinarian.
