A year after the 2024 election, Democrats are still asking what went wrong — and one think tank has a provocative answer: stop saying “Climate change.” According to Grist, new polling from the Searchlight Institute found that while most Americans believe Climate change is real, it ranks far below affordability and health care on their list of concerns. Yet, when asked what Democrats care about most, “Climate change” topped the list — creating a perception gap that may be costing them votes.

Some Democrats, like Representative Sean Casten, argue the problem isn’t talking about Climate change — it’s how they talk about it. Casten’s proposed “Cheap Energy Agenda” reframes clean energy as a way to lower bills and strengthen the economy. “Polling doesn’t tell you what to talk about,” he said. “It tells you how to talk about it.”

But while strategists push for rebranding, the issue itself is fading from the national spotlight. Anthony Leiserowitz of Yale’s Program on Climate change Communication notes that media coverage and Google searches for “Climate change” have dropped by half since 2023. “If nobody’s talking about it,” he said, “people assume it’s not important.”

At the same time, progressive movements like the Sunrise Movement have pivoted toward defending free speech and democracy under the Trump administration. Climate activists warn that without constant attention, momentum for protecting the planet could stall — just as Global warming accelerates.

Messaging may need to evolve, but silence isn’t the answer. Talking about the environment through the lens of affordable energy, jobs, and community resilience might bridge the gap between policy and everyday life. If Democrats stop leading that conversation, someone else — likely with fewer green intentions — will.

It’s time to bring climate back to the kitchen table. Voters may care about costs, but the cost of inaction is far higher.
