During a press briefing on May 13, the World Health Organization (WHO)’s leaders spoke about the latest updates on the coronavirus and the pandemic. Michael Ryan, head of the WHO’s health emergencies program and Dr. Tedros spoke in front of the press.
Ryan spoke about the virus’ ubiquity and said that it might become a fact of life, a virus that is managed, instead of one that is eradicated. The only human disease that has been eradicated has been smallpox. Others are treated with vaccines or other treatments.
“This virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away. H.I.V. has not gone away but we’ve come to terms with the virus and we have found the therapies and we have found the prevention methods, and people don’t feel as scared as they did before,” said Ryan at the briefing.
Ryan also warned against the hope that a vaccine would provide a quick fix to the virus, once it has been developed. “There are no promises in this and there are no dates,” he said. Expressing some cynicism for eradication and the vaccine he said, “we have some perfectly effective vaccines on this planet that we have not used effectively for diseases we could have eradicated.”
