A man in his 40s made headlines after an extreme diet landed him in a Florida hospital with dangerously high cholesterol. According to a case published in JAMA Cardiology, the man consumed an unconventional diet of 6 to 9 pounds of cheese, butter, and hamburgers daily for eight months.
This high-fat, meat-heavy regimen was intended to help him lose weight and boost his overall health, as advised by internet sources. And while he did see some benefits—like weight loss, increased energy, and improved mental clarity—the consequences were severe. He developed yellowish deposits on his skin, particularly on his palms, elbows, and soles, and his cholesterol levels skyrocketed to over 1,000 mg per deciliter—five times higher than the normal range.
Dr. Konstantinos Marmagkiolis, an interventional cardiologist at Tampa General Hospital, diagnosed the man with xanthelasma, a condition where cholesterol builds up on the skin. While xanthelasma itself is harmless, it can be a warning sign of underlying risks like heart disease or stroke.
This case highlights the risks associated with high-fat, protein-rich diets that rely heavily on meat and dairy. While the body needs cholesterol to function, consuming excessive amounts through diet can lead to serious health complications. Marmagkiolis emphasized the importance of monitoring cholesterol levels for those following such diets.
