Sometimes the most transformative encounters are the ones you never see coming. For Mirelle Radley, a solo trip through South America turned into something far more profound than a travel adventure — it became a second chance at life, delivered by a scrappy, golden eyed street dog in the mountains of Peru.
Radley had been quietly surviving rather than truly living. After losing her brother to suicide, she found herself back on the treadmill of expectation, going through the motions of a career in biotech without a real sense of direction or joy. A planned trip to South America offered the promise of escape, and even a broken back four months before departure nearly could not stop her from going.
It was in Ollantaytambo, a mountain village nestled in the Sacred Valley, that a small, thin dog with half flopped ears and golden eyes wandered up to her hammock and simply refused to leave. He had been surviving on scraps, alone and unnamed, yet his spirit was electric. Radley called him Paddington, after the beloved bear, and Paddy quickly proved he had earned the name — roaring and zooming with the unrestrained joy of an animal who had never been told to calm down.
What followed was a four month labor of love. Bringing a street dog home from Peru to the UK meant navigating a mountain of paperwork, a language barrier, a near detainment in Colombia and a several day delay in France. According to The Guardian, Radley describes the journey as one she would repeat without hesitation.
Paddy did not just travel home with Radley — he rewrote her entire trajectory. She left her career, began writing a book and partnered with Colitas Con Canas, a Peruvian rescue center working to give more street dogs a future. Through Paddy’s Instagram following, she has since helped relocate other rescued dogs to loving homes across Europe, turning one act of compassion into a ripple of sustainable change for animals in need.
His story is a reminder that wellness and healing can arrive on four paws, unannounced and full of roaring, goblin energy.
