Two individuals are facing animal abuse charges after the Guardia Civil discovered 107 fighting cocks at a home in Betera, located in Valencia province in Spain. The Guardia Civil’s environment team, Seprona, raided the property, revealing a disturbing scene of extensive animal mistreatment.
Among the 107 birds found, 70 were reported to be in extremely poor condition, showing signs of severe abuse. The authorities also found a dog and a blue macaw, both exhibiting signs of mistreatment. The macaw had its wing feathers trimmed and lacked proper documentation, which is a serious concern given its status as a protected species.
The raid revealed that the birds had sustained multiple injuries, consistent with their use in organized and illegal cockfighting activities. A treadmill, believed to be used for training the birds for these fights, was also discovered on the premises.
Following the raid, the authorities removed all the animals from the property. The birds have been taken into protective custody by the Guardia Civil. The dog has been transferred to a municipal shelter, while the blue macaw has been relocated to Valencia’s Centre for the Recovery of Exotic Birds, where it is receiving care and a new home. A man and a woman, aged 40 and 36, are currently under investigation by a court in Paterna. The charges they face underscore the severity of the animal abuse uncovered during the raid.
