Alaska State Troopers reported that the snowmachine operator, who collided with the dog team, promptly stopped to assist and has since been in contact with authorities. As of now, alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash, and no arrests or citations have been issued. An ongoing investigation aims to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The sled dogs were under the “care” of musher Mike Parker at the time of the collision. The tragic loss included three dogs: John Lennon, Solo, and Buttercup, with KitKat sustaining injuries but remaining stable as of Thursday, awaiting surgery for a fractured femur and other injuries.
Parker paid tribute to the departed dogs, describing them as fantastic leaders in sled dog races, including the Iditarod and Kobuk 440. He highlighted their achievements, such as setting a speed record in the Hal Bartko Nome Sign 40. Beyond their athletic prowess, Parker emphasized the dogs’ gentle and affectionate nature, stating that they embodied the true spirit of Alaska.
The mushing community was already shaken by a similar incident on the Denali Highway in November, where two dogs lost their lives. Parker expressed hope that no other musher would have to endure such a horrifying experience on the trail. One way to avoid these issues is to stop using sled dogs altogether!
As the investigation unfolds, the community rallies around Jim Lanier, Mike Parker, and the remaining dogs. Despite the grief, there is optimism for KitKat’s recovery.
