This Dog’s Shelter Stay Transformation Will Break Your Heart

A video shared by shelter volunteer Julie Saraceno sheds light on the dwindling enthusiasm of Kylie, a five-year-old canine resident of the Benton Franklin Humane Society in Kennewick, Washington. The heartbreaking footage, posted on TikTok under the handle @juliesaraceno2, traces Kylie’s journey from a joyous arrival at the shelter in December 2021 to her current state, standing eagerly by the gate in the hope of finding a forever home.

Kylie’s story began in 2020 when she was surrendered to a different shelter while pregnant, subsequently being transferred to Benton Franklin Humane Society for a purported “better chance” at adoption. Despite gaining significant online attention, Kylie has spent over 1,000 days waiting for a loving family to take her home.

Julie Saraceno, a dedicated volunteer at the shelter, expressed her deep empathy for Kylie, stating, “I feel like she deserves all the attention after almost three years as a shelter dog.” The heart-wrenching video, set to a poignant melody after starting with The Village People’s “YMCA,” has garnered over 18,000 views since its posting on November 7.

Despite Kylie’s evident charm and lovable qualities, she struggles to find a home due to her need to be the only pet in the household. Saraceno revealed that Kylie is an energetic dog who delights in outdoor activities, running in the play yard, and playing fetch. The shelter ensures she always has a stuffed toy, especially those that squeak, in her kennel.

The primary obstacle to Kylie’s adoption seems to be her difficulty in getting along with other dogs, a trait that has prolonged her stay at the shelter.
