Shelter Dog’s DNA Test Reveals His True Identity

In the heart of Gallup, New Mexico, the McKinley County Humane Society faced an unexpected arrival in 2022 that would set the stage for a unique and challenging journey. Zayne, a canine with peculiar physical and behavioral traits, piqued the curiosity of shelter volunteers, leading them to believe he might be more than the average rescue.

Katie Forbis, representing the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary in New Mexico, remarked on Zayne’s distinctive features. While his appearance hinted at a possible wolfdog lineage, a comprehensive assessment was needed. An Embark DNA test confirmed the suspicions, revealing that Zayne was approximately 22 percent gray wolf.

The United States patchwork of regulations regarding wolfdogs meant that Zayne’s fate hung in the balance. McKinley County, where Zayne found himself, strictly prohibited the ownership of wolfdogs, regardless of their percentage. This legal constraint left Zayne in a precarious situation, unable to be adopted by a new human due to the restrictions in place.

Forbis highlighted the challenges faced by wolfdogs, drawing a parallel to the stigma surrounding Pitbull breeds. In McKinley County, even a low percentage of wolf content could lead to the seizure and euthanasia of the animal if discovered in an illegal area. Zayne’s future became uncertain until the McKinley County Humane Society reached out to the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary, located just two hours away.

Despite nearing capacity, the sanctuary couldn’t turn away an animal in need. “We couldn’t say no to an animal less than two hours away who needed us,” stated Forbis, underlining their commitment to providing Zayne a forever home.

Zayne’s story took another turn shortly after adoption when he was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy, a neurologic disease causing gradual muscle wasting and incoordination. Undeterred, the sanctuary staff resolved to give Zayne the best possible quality of life. Regular walks and playtime became essential components of his care, aiming to maintain muscle mass and extend his moments of joy.

In the loving embrace of the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary, Zayne now faces life’s challenges with resilience, surrounded by a team dedicated to ensuring his twilight years are filled with care, compassion, and the freedom to be his true self.
