These Scotland Homes Will Be Powered by Green Hydrogen Gas

A small neighborhood of 300 homes on the east coast of Scotland is taking the energy revolution to the next level by using green hydrogen gas.

For the next year, the homes in Buckhaven and Methil will be powered entirely by green hydrogen gas through a project called H100.

The project will last over five years, and the homes will be offered free hydrogen-ready boilers and cookers. This will be the first time the National Grid will use something besides natural gas to provide energy. They will begin to mix hydrogen with natural gas in the following three years.

Many wondered why this location was chosen for this amazing revolutionary experiment. The Scotland coast is notorious for wind, which makes the new project’s location a great choice. The region has a long history of coal mines, but collectively they are now more interested in and focused on sustainable natural resources and renewable energy. The town of Buckhaven is a waterfront town and boasts a 200-meter wind turbine that collects all of the wind from the sea to turn into green energy.

The town’s turbine will now generate electricity to power the electrolyzer. This will turn water into hydrogen gas and oxygen, which will then be stored in the area and pumped into the local’s homes.

Heating homes are responsible for nearly a third of the carbon emissions from the UK, and this project will save more than 2,650 tons of C02 from entering the atmosphere, BBC reported.

“Hopefully, we can get a more sustainable and a more stable energy source through hydrogen energy. And of course, it’s good for the environment as well,” said Caroline Cunningham, who signed up for the project.

“I think we’ve taken a lot from the world and it’s time that we move forward now on different types of energy sources, like the hydrogen energy.”

The practice is currently more expensive, but they hope that this project and research in these homes will help promote better energy sources for the environment and eventually drive the cost down. While this will need more research, this is an excellent step towards a renewable future.
