Prepare yourselves for a serious announcement, Green Monsters. With the festive season upon us, we thought it only fair to warn you that you may end up encountering a terrifying Pit Bull dressed in a holiday costume … and that the cuteness may be too much for you to handle. Forewarned is forearmed. After all, if you’re not careful you may end up getting licked all over your face (gasp!) or even receiving a stealth cuddle or two.

Recently, Imgur user barlos was kind enough to provide their followers with an example of the kind of fearsome image that might appear before their eyes. The picture is captioned: “Just a friendly reminder to keep an eye out for those vicious Pit Bulls this holiday season.”

Dog breeds who fall under the category of “Pit Bull” include: the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Blue Blood Bulldog, and the Dogo Argentino. While Pit Bulls are often unfairly demonized as “aggressive” or “dangerous” in sensational news stories, it is not well known that they used to be called “nanny dogs” because of their great loyalty toward their guardians. As with any other type of dog, these pooches simply need adequate training and socialization in their early life to ensure that they grow up to be happy and well-adjusted.

However, thanks to the proliferance of Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) in a number of areas throughout the U.S., the chances of these dogs securing a loving home are significantly reduced. In recent months, there have even been a number of cases in which a loving family Pit Bull was forbidden from staying in their hometown … even after they had just helped protect their humans from danger!

BSL has been condemned by groups as diverse as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Bar Association. This type of legislation is regarded as costly to enforce and problematic for civil liberties, and there is little to no evidence that it actually improves public safety.

Even where a Pit Bull has suffered horrendous cruelty and adversity, their resilience, strength, and ability to love again can amaze the hardest of hearts. A number of Pit Bulls who were formerly used in fighting rings have gone on to become loving family companions while many of the former fighting dogs used by Michael Vick and co-conspirators have inspired animal lovers everywhere with their beautiful personalities and loving hearts.

So if you have a Pit Bull (or any other animal companion) in your life, know that all they want for Christmas is … a hug!
