According to BuzzFeed (via a piece by HuffPost contributor Leigh Weingus), neurologists and neuroscientists are sounding the alarm about everyday foods that may quietly harm brain health. While the occasional indulgence is fine, these specialists highlight seven popular items they either avoid completely or consume sparingly — and their reasons might surprise you.

Protein powders, often marketed as a fitness essential, are loaded with artificial sweeteners that can disrupt gut health, where most neurotransmitters are produced. Soda is another major culprit: packed with sugar or synthetic substitutes, it inflames the brain, damages blood vessels, and may increase dementia and stroke risk. Margarine, once seen as a “healthier” alternative to butter, contains trans fats that have been linked to cognitive decline and dementia.

Even cannabis edibles, though trendy, can pose risks. High amounts of THC can constrict brain arteries, potentially triggering strokes in vulnerable individuals. Beer is another red flag, with neurologists calling it “empty calories” and a neurotoxin that harms both central and peripheral nervous systems.

For coffee lovers, decaf may not be as harmless as it seems. Unless labeled solvent-free, the decaffeination process can involve chemicals like methylene chloride, linked to neurological harm. And finally, French fries — beloved but damaging — can weaken the blood-brain barrier and cause hippocampal damage, impairing memory and learning.

The message from brain health experts is clear: our daily diets matter as much as mental exercises like puzzles or crosswords. Choosing whole, plant-based foods, healthy fats like olive oil, and staying hydrated can protect cognitive function well into old age. By cutting down on brain-harming foods, we can give both our minds and bodies the best chance to thrive.
