From a viewer’s perspective, watching wild animals perform in movies might seem like a lot of fun, but for the animals, the reality is often quite the opposite. Animals used in entertainment are subject to the worst forms of “training” to get them to perform unnatural tricks and feats. To make sure the perfect take or shots are achieved, animals may be starved or abused, so they have no choice but to comply.
This was the sort of life that Joe the chimpanzee was made to live as a performer in Hollywood. As if enduring the stress that comes along with being a film star wasn’t enough, when Joe retired from the big screen, he was sent to live in a rusty cage at The Mobile Zoo. Thankfully, many kind people, including Jane Goodall, and organizations banded together to free Joe from this sorry existence.
After years of hard work, Joe’s freedom was secured, and he was sent to the Save the Chimps Sanctuary, where he gets all the care he needs and finally has the chance to interact with other chimpanzees!
