The deadly viral disease was found in the body of a dead boar, making it the first time a case has been reported in the center of Italy. Trash bins have been fenced off, picnics have been banned, and feeding or approaching the animals has been forbidden. People who walk through farmland or nature reserves in the affected areas have been directed to disinfect their shoes.

According to estimates from Coldiretti, the farmers’ association, 23,000 wild boar live in and around roam, The Guardian reported. The animals are often seen in parks or all around the city rummaging in trash cans.

A nightly curfew has been imposed after incidents of the wild boars attacking humans. The Guardian reported that a woman was pushed to the ground by a boar when she was taking out her trash.

Although the African swine fever cannot be transmitted to humans, it is fatal to pigs and wild boars. Earlier this year, a wild boar was found with the disease in northern Piedmont, which prompted officials to create measures to destroy the spread of the illness.

A major problem with the spread of this illness is how we commercially raise pigs. Pigs raised for food are often stuffed inside in small areas with hundreds of other animals.
