As veterinary bills climb to staggering new heights, pet owners across the U.S. are going to extraordinary lengths to keep their furry family members healthy. According to The Boston Globe, one Massachusetts couple, Paty Garcia and Jorge Lopez-Avila, are driving 2,300 miles to their native Monterrey, Mexico, so their three rescue dogs can get dental cleanings — at a tenth of the U.S. price. In Mexico, each procedure will cost about $250, compared with the $4,000 quote they received from their Boston veterinarian.

The skyrocketing costs aren’t limited to a few clinics. Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that since 2020, the price of veterinary care has increased by 43 percent — far outpacing overall inflation. Behind the trend, experts point to private equity buyouts of local vet practices, which often prioritize profit over affordable care. Many long-standing community clinics have been purchased by large investment firms such as United Veterinary Care, a portfolio company of Nordic Capital.

The result? Everyday Americans are being priced out of pet ownership. Some, like North Andover resident Jonathan Tummino, have seen dental quotes for their cats nearly double within months. Others, such as Boston’s Animal Rescue League president Edward Schettino, warn that rising costs are causing a heartbreaking surge in pet surrenders — up 78 percent this year. Even low-cost programs like the Wellness Waggin’ can’t keep up with demand.

The crisis underscores a deeper issue: when profit takes precedence over compassion, animals and families suffer. It also serves as a reminder that how we care for animals reflects how we treat our planet — both depend on empathy, sustainability, and fairness. Choosing plant-based foods, supporting nonprofit animal care groups, and speaking out against corporate greed in pet care are small but powerful ways to help protect life on Earth in all its forms.
