A recent scientific review published in the medical journal Frontiers in Nutrition suggests that avoiding red meat and adopting a plant-based lifestyle can have a positive impact on endometriosis symptoms.
Endometriosis is a condition that affects between one and five percent of individuals in North America, Australia, and Europe. It occurs when endometrial tissues grow outside the uterine lining, causing pain in the lower abdomen, debilitating period pain, and discomfort during or after sex.
The review, which analyzed multiple studies on food’s impact on endometriosis, found that plant-based diets’ anti-inflammatory properties could help alleviate symptoms. In contrast, consuming red meat and poultry was linked to a higher risk of developing the disease. This is partly due to the fact that red and processed meat consumption can increase estrogen levels in the blood, which are associated with endometriosis symptoms.
With limited treatment options available for endometriosis, the authors of the review suggest that nutritional intervention may be a helpful course of action. Reducing dietary fat and increasing fiber intake have been shown to lower circulating estrogen concentrations, potentially benefiting those with endometriosis.
One study cited in the review found that individuals who consumed more than two servings of red meat per day had a 56 percent increased risk of developing endometriosis compared to those who ate less than one serving per week. Poultry consumption was also noted as a potential risk factor.
Plant-based diets, on the other hand, have been found to be beneficial for endometriosis sufferers. Their ability to reduce inflammation has been documented in other health conditions as well, such as coronary artery disease.
Seaweed, in particular, is an ideal food for those with endometriosis. Research on post-menopausal women has shown that seaweed consumption can lower estrogen levels, potentially reducing estradiol concentrations in pre-menopausal women. Additionally, vitamins D and C have been linked to the prevention and treatment of endometriosis.
Reducing your meat intake and eating more plant-based foods is known to help with chronic inflammation, heart health, mental wellbeing, fitness goals, nutritional needs, allergies, gut health, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and more! Plant-based diets have also been found to lower rates and risks for various diseases! Conversely, dairy and meat consumption has been linked to many health problems, including acne, hormonal imbalance, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and more.
