A massive new French study has revealed that even the healthiest-looking diets can secretly damage your gut. According to findings from Le French Gut project, which tracked 100,000 people, some of today’s most popular food trends are reducing gut microbial diversity by up to 40%. This kind of gut disruption has been linked to increased risks of colorectal cancer, metabolic issues, and inflammatory bowel disease.
The study shows that ultra-processed foods—often marketed as “healthy”—are major culprits. Ingredients like refined grains, emulsifiers, and artificial sweeteners interfere with gut bacteria, damaging the intestinal lining and allowing harmful microbes to spread. Even additives such as carboxymethylcellulose can promote cardiovascular problems by increasing toxic microbial byproducts.
Perhaps most surprising, the researchers found that mental health is also affected. Disruptions to the gut-brain axis caused by these additives may increase anxiety and mood disorders. In contrast, participants who followed a Mediterranean diet had a more resilient gut microbiome. They produced higher levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which help keep the gut lining strong and inflammation in check.
Interestingly, those eating Mediterranean-style diets reported more gas—but less digestive discomfort. This signals a vibrant microbial ecosystem at work, thriving on fiber-rich foods like berries, legumes, and olive oil.
The study also highlights how low-fiber diets harm beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium and Faecalibacterium. SCFA levels drop dramatically with too little fiber, weakening our immune system and metabolic health.
French scientists now recommend a shift toward personalized, microbiome-based nutrition strategies. And while gut-healing is possible, they warn against sudden overhauls. Instead, it’s best to cut processed additives slowly, focus on fiber-rich whole foods, and monitor how your body responds.
Let’s ditch the diet fads and nourish the gut instead. Go plant-based, eat less processed food, and Support companies that put your gut—and the planet—first.
