If skeptics need any more proof that the future of food is plant-based, here is yet another study that shows that meat, dairy, and egg alternatives are booming in sales across ALL nine U.S. regions, with total sales surpassing $3.7 billion.
The data, compiled by Nielsen and Whole Foods Market over a 52-week period, and commissioned by the Good Food Institute (GFI), revealed that plant-based meat sales have grown by 23 percent in the past year, a very impressive growth from the six percent increase the previous year. And this double-digit growth is being seen across all nine U.S. census regions, with refrigerated plant-based meat sales growing the fastest in the Pacific and Mountain regions, and frozen plant-based meat sales showing the fastest growth in the West South Central region. Brands seeing the most growth are Beyond Meat, followed by Field Roast, Gardein, Dr. Praeger’s, and Quorn.
And when it comes to the $1.8 billion plant-based dairy market, milk alternatives have become so commonplace that consumers are branching out to dairy-free alternatives to creamers, yogurts, cheeses, and ice creams, all of which have seen remarkable double-digit growth.

GFI Director of Corporate Engagement Alison Rabschnuk commented on the research: “As consumers look to decrease their meat consumption, more and more people are choosing plant-based meat. In fact, 12 percent of households across the U.S. now purchase plant-based meat … [This is] a significant increase from last year, and I expect we’ll see that trend continue.”
We surely think the trend will continue to soar, too! Not only are these findings good news for plant-based companies, but it is also a promising sign that Americans are beginning to embrace plant-based alternatives and make healthier choices, which is not only great for human health (and animal welfare), but for the health of the entire planet.
