Dogs are a lot like children. If you raise them right, there’s a very good chance that they will grow up to be upstanding adults who can be respectable members of society. Alternatively, if they spend their young lives subject to abuse, they may very well develop an aggressive exterior and violent tendencies as a result of their brutal upbringing. The difference is, we treat children case-by-case. We know that race or gender may have played a small part in the overall situation, but we also know that we cannot generalize, each child is different. Unfortunately, we don’t extend this same common-sense ideology to dogs.
Pit Bulls, for example, are often seen as violent and brutish, usually for no reason other than their breed. Fletcher, the Pit Bull in the video above, has clearly been abused in one way or another. When animal control captured Fletcher they did not know where his scars and wounds came from, but it was clear that the pup was terrified of people. He wasn’t born with this stand-offish attitude and fear for humans, he developed it.
Thankfully, there are kind people in the world who see a dog like Fletcher and do not merely see a huge burden. Instead, they see a beautiful opportunity to teach this dog how to love, to let him know that not all humans are evil.
Stephanie Paluch, founder of the rescue group Players for Pits, is one of these people. She took Fletcher in, and while he is still very skiddish, he is slowly warming up.
He sure seems to like the way Paluch sings. Just look at the face!
With enough love, Fletcher will learn that for as much cruelty there is in the world, there is also kindness.
Fletcher’s road to recovery has only just started, but with enough TLC we have hope that he will be leading the sweet and carefree life he always deserved! To learn more about Players for Pits, visit their website.
