For most elephants, reaching old age is heartbreakingly rare due to poaching and habitat loss. But Craig, a legendary bull elephant from Kenya, defied the odds. He lived to around 54 years old, became a father, and died peacefully in the wild. His long life was made possible by sustained protection from Conservation programs led by Kenyan authorities and local communities.
Craig was one of the last remaining Super Tuskers, elephants targeted heavily by poachers because of their massive ivory. After his natural death, wildlife officials removed and secured his tusks to ensure they would never fuel the ivory trade. Stories like Craig’s show that Conservation works when it is properly funded and enforced.
Elephant populations across Africa have fallen by roughly seventy percent over recent decades. Yet in Kenya, numbers have begun to rise again thanks to strong protection efforts.
