According to a relatively unknown New York state law, New Yorkers must be 21 to buy whipped cream in the state. The law was enacted last year but recently came to the attention of shoppers in Albany County when a shop posted a sign in front of a refrigerator door.

“Effective 8/12/22 we will be IDing for whipped cream! Must be 21 years old!” the sign read, according to NBC New York.
The sign went viral and brought the 9-month-old law into the public eye. The chargers that shoot the whipped cream out of the can are filled with nitrous oxide, which is also known as laughing gas or “whippits”.
The law was created to prevent teenagers and other people from inhaling dangerous gas that can get you high. The gas can cause numerous serious health issues like heart attack, psychosis, psychological dependence, and sudden death, according to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation.
New York State Sen. Joseph Addabbo, the sponsor of the bill, said, “The need to limit the access and sale of whippits first became apparent after receiving constituent complaints about empty canisters on neighborhood streets,” he said. “Used whippits piling up in our communities are not only an eye sore, but also indicative of a significant nitrous oxide abuse problem.”
However, Addabbo told NBC News that it was never the intent for stores to card shoppers for whipped cream.
“It’s actually the cartridge or charger” that’s being banned from sale to young people, Addabbo told NBC News. “It’s a small 2-inch charger or cartridge. Those are the words in the bill.”
However, some stores still have put up signs in recent weeks informing of the new law. These gases should never be inhaled, and it is extremely dangerous and unhealthy for your body. The long-term effects of using ‘whippits’ include loss of blood pressure, liver damage, kidney damage, memory problems, weakened immune system, spasms, and even depletion of vitamin B12 which encourages nerve damage.
