As any Green Monster who is just a tiny bit obsessed with their furbabies might know, when someone invites us to talk about them, there is no end to the hilarious anecdotes we can come up with. In the video above, Miley Cyrus tells Jimmy Fallon that the reason she adopted a plant-based diet was because her pet blowfish was “highly intelligent.” She said, “When I would come through the door, this blowfish would come to the side and get excited. … He really knew who I was and he really got excited when I was home. One day I went to a sushi restaurant with a few of my friends and they were serving blowfish, and I thought, ‘you know, this is an intelligent animal’.”
While fish are often derided as being brainless, Culum Brown, a Macquarie University biologist, has said that they are in fact complex animals with cognitive abilities that often “match or exceed those of ‘higher’ vertebrates, including nonhuman primates.” It looks like Cyrus has figured that out!
She also says that a typical day in her life involves being chased for food by her pet pig – proving that we are all fools for love when it comes to our animals, whether we are famous or not! The pig eats a plant-based diet, just like Cyrus, but the vet has advised her that he needs to lose some weight! We’re all guilty of showering our animals with too many treats at times.
Whatever your opinion may be on Cyrus’ music or public persona, it cannot be denied that she has compassion for animals. In addition to eating a plant-based diet, she recently took to Instagram to help end cruel endangered wolf culls in British Columbia, Canada. It is wonderful to see a celebrity using their fame and influence to speak out on behalf of those who have no voice. Keep it up, Miley!
