Michigan is taking a new swing at Big Oil, and this time the state is talking about your bills. According to Karen Zraick, Attorney General Dana Nessel filed a federal antitrust case on Friday. It targets ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP, and the American Petroleum Institute.
The complaint says the companies worked to slow wind and solar. It also claims they tried to stall electric vehicles, keeping people tied to pricier fuels. Nessel says Michigan faces an energy affordability crisis, and that rising costs reflect corporate greed more than normal inflation.
This approach stands out because many climate cases focus on damages or consumer protection claims, often in state courts. Here, Michigan is trying to show collusion, not just harm. That is a high bar, and antitrust experts say it may be tough to prove.
Still, the politics are clear. Energy prices hit working families first, and they can also block progress on a safer environment. When clean power loses ground, Pollution keeps building, and that can harm our health over time.
The case also arrives after federal pushback. The Justice Department tried to stop Michigan from filing climate litigation. A federal judge tossed that effort as too speculative.
Industry groups are already pushing back too. Exxon called the lawsuit legally incoherent, while the American Petroleum Institute says energy policy belongs in Congress, not courts.
Meanwhile, other states are moving ahead with their own cases. The Supreme Court may soon weigh in on where these lawsuits can be heard, and what state law can do.
Whatever happens next, Michigan is betting that affordability and accountability can travel together. If you want a future that protects wildlife and animals, back renewables and cut fossil demand. You can also eat more plant based food, including vegan meals, for a healthier Earth and cleaner communities.
