Now more than ever, people are making conscious dietary decisions and identifying as vegan, vegetarian, or “flexitarian,” and this trend has stirred up some major changes in the food space. In general, demand for plant-based food products has risen by 140 percent in just a few years. Even meat-centric establishments like steakhouses and fast food joints like White Castle have included plant-based options for discerning patrons, and new plant-based meat and dairy alternatives are showing up on grocery shelves all the time. And now Lean Cuisine has caught on to this trend with the introduction of seven new meatless meals, including two vegan options!
The two plant-based options are Coconut Chickpea Curry and Sicilian-Style Pesto with Lentil Pasta. The curry dish is made with organic chickpeas and tomatoes, brown rice, and a Malaysian-style coconut curry sauce. In addition to being vegan, it is gluten-free and has 19 grams of fiber and 12 grams of complete plant protein. The pesto pasta dish is made of organic lentil penne, roasted red peppers, spinach, yellow carrots, and a Sicilian-style pesto sauce with chopped tomatoes and vegetables. It is also loaded with 15 grams of complete plant protein and five grams of fiber.
Julie Lehman, Lean Cuisine Marketing Director, stated, “The Lean Cuisine team of chefs and nutritionists work hand in hand to create new ways to meet women’s evolving needs … The new Origins subline offers even more of what our consumers are after, from gluten-free foods to meatless offerings to options made with organic ingredients and now, vegan dishes. We have recipes every woman will enjoy, no matter their preference because we want to help nourish women and their pursuits.”
Considering industrialized animal agriculture is responsible for mass air and water Pollution, contributes greatly to greenhouse gases and Climate change, and, of course, disturbing incidents of animal cruelty, this move by a big brand like Lean Cuisine is HUGE for animals and the environment.
