Tall wind turbines stand majestically against a vibrant sky, generating renewable energy amidst lush green fields in the Netherlands.

In Iowa, wind turbines have become as iconic as red barns and Trump signs — a surprising combo in a state that voted overwhelmingly for Donald Trump in 2016, 2020, and 2024. But as Benji Jones reports for Vox, political preferences haven’t stopped wind power from becoming a central part of the state’s energy identity and economy.

Despite former President Trump’s repeated claims that wind turbines are “ugly” and “ruin neighborhoods,” Iowa now gets nearly 60% of its electricity from wind — the highest share in the country. For farmers, this shift is more about income than ideology. Leasing land for turbines can bring in tens of thousands of dollars a year, helping to stabilize rural incomes in the face of volatile crop prices and climate-related disasters.

This isn’t just about farmers. Iowans across the board benefit from lower energy bills thanks to wind’s stable and affordable costs. According to Lazard’s 2024 report, onshore wind is now the cheapest source of energy — even without subsidies.

Still, Trump’s latest executive orders have cast a shadow over the sector. New restrictions and potential tariffs could disrupt supply chains and slow development, even in states like Iowa where wind energy has bipartisan Support. The irony? These policies could hurt the very communities that powered Trump’s victories.

For now, Iowa stands as a rare example of renewable success in a red state. But as clean energy jobs and infrastructure come under threat, the need for action becomes clearer.

If you believe in a cleaner, greener future, now is the time to speak up. Support wind energy, shop from companies that use renewables, and pressure lawmakers to protect climate-smart policies. Let’s keep progress spinning — literally.
