Britain achieved a milestone in green energy as wind turbines produced a record amount of electricity on Sunday night. At 6:30 PM, the nation’s 12,000 turbines generated 22.2 gigawatts, surpassing the previous record of 21.8 GW set last December. This output accounted for more than half of the country’s electricity supply, with wind power contributing nearly 70% of the demand in the early hours of Monday.
The remarkable performance followed a period of low wind output earlier in the week when gas-powered electricity dominated. The change highlights the variability of weather-dependent energy sources. Analysts suggest that additional records could be set later this month, thanks to the growing number of wind farms, including the SSE Viking wind farm in Shetland, which became fully operational in September.
The Met Office reported higher-than-average wind speeds across the country on Sunday night, particularly in Scotland, home to many of the UK’s wind farms. The Cairngorms recorded wind speeds of 57 knots, well above the December average of 33 knots, while Wales and other areas also experienced stronger winds.
Wind power has been Britain’s leading electricity source throughout the first nine months of 2024, bolstered by projects like the Dogger Bank wind farm in the North Sea. Think tank Ember noted that wind energy could become the top source of electricity for the entire year, marking a shift toward renewables outpacing fossil fuels.
These advancements Support the government’s goal of achieving 95% clean electricity by 2030. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband’s recent strategy emphasized the importance of offshore wind farms in meeting this target. However, the report also highlighted the need for better energy storage, such as batteries and pumped hydro, and the role of demand management to address the intermittent nature of renewable energy.
