Authorities in New South Wales are investigating a possible case of poisoning after 30 magpies were found in distress in Cootamundra. Nine of the birds have died, and over a dozen others are receiving treatment at Cooper Street Veterinary Hospital. Many of the affected magpies have lost mobility and are unable to stand or walk.
Karlie Johnston, the practice manager at the hospital, suspects poisoning due to the large number of birds affected in a short period. Most of the birds were discovered in two streets in northern Cootamundra. The local environmental watchdog, the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), is conducting tests to determine the cause. If found to be related to pesticide misuse, individuals could face fines of up to $500,000, while corporations could be penalized up to $2 million.
Johnston said that the poisoning might be linked to pesticides, rodenticides, or herbicides. The EPA is expected to announce its findings in the coming weeks.
