Construction has begun on a huge offshore wind farm just 15 miles off Long Beach, New York, despite a recent executive order from President Trump aimed at halting new offshore wind projects. As reported by Carl Campanile for the New York Post, Norway-based energy company Equinor had already secured all the necessary federal permits for its Empire Wind 1 project before the order took effect.

The project will feature 54 wind turbines and is expected to provide enough clean electricity to power 500,000 homes. Energy will be delivered by a cable connecting the turbines to Con Edison’s grid through the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. Supporters, including Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul, see it as crucial to meeting New York’s goal of 100% zero-emission electricity by 2040.

While some critics, including commercial fishing groups and President Trump, argue that offshore wind harms marine life and disrupts the fishing industry, Equinor maintains that all regulations have been followed. The company confirmed that marine construction is underway and that over 1,500 workers are revitalizing the Brooklyn terminal to serve as a hub for the project.

Although concerns have been raised about the visibility of the turbines from the coastline and potential impacts on ship navigation, the broader push for renewable energy continues to gain momentum. With fossil fuels being a leading cause of climate change and biodiversity loss, projects like Empire Wind 1 represent a hopeful shift toward a greener future.

Now more than ever, supporting clean energy solutions is vital. Choosing renewable power, cutting back on fossil fuels, and advocating for a plant-based lifestyle all help protect our oceans, our wildlife, and our planet. Every small action adds up to big change — let’s keep pushing for a healthier world!
