Cat walking in the forest

When @justjosevisuals spotted this starving cat abandoned in the middle of the woods, she knew she had to help. The poor guy was near the side of the road and was in danger of being hit by a car, and looked extremely malnourished.

“He was skin and bones when I first touched him. He was severely dehydrated,” said Josie in a TikTok post. She could tell by the way that he was acting that he was a lost or abandoned house cat. It was early in the morning, and the vet wasn’t open so she decided to take him home and give him some much-needed TLC! She cleaned him up, gave him food and water, and decided to name him Lucian.

At the vet, Lucian received infusions, blood tests, and a checkup to make sure that nothing major was wrong. Veterinarians determined that beyond the visible minor injuries on his arm and leg, he also had maggots in his arm which was much more serious. Maggots will feed on necrotic tissue and can cause a bacterial skin infection for felines if gone untreated. Luckily, the doctors were able to safely remove the maggots and stitch him up. For the amount of pain Lucian must have been in, doctors were relieved that he still had an appetite, which was a great sign.

After spending some time at the veterinarian’s office, so that doctors could closely monitor how he was doing, it finally came time for Lucian to go home! The little fighter seemed to feel at home almost immediately. He explored his home and even found a special place to nap near the window. He loves chasing feather toys and zooming up and down the hallways, from one end of the house to the other. He finally looks healthy and happy and is adjusting wonderfully to his new environment.

Unfortunately, It is not uncommon to find abandoned dogs and cats in yards and public spaces. For these innocent animals, who are so used to being in a home, it can be terrifying being left outside to fend for themselves. If you happen to find an abandoned animal outside, first make sure that they’re lost or abandoned. You can then post messages on online pet rescue groups or message boards such as the Missing Pet Network. Place signs around the neighborhood asking if the cat belongs to anyone. Contact local shelters to file a “Found Cat Report,” advises SPCA.
