For those who wear fur, it is a symbol of luxury and upper class, but for an animal lover passing a fur wearer on the street, it is the equivalent of walking past a butcher shop. The only place fur belongs is on its owner, which certainly isn’t a human.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) estimates that millions of animals are killed each year to supply fur. In addition to animals bred in farms and killed for their fur, other animals are often caught in wild traps, as well. Some of the animals destined for fur coats, boot linings, and other fashion accessories include raccoon dogs, rabbits, foxes, mink, chinchillas, dogs, cats and more. They are kept in wire cages until they face their death through a variety of means chosen to avoid damaging their valuable fur, including gas chambers and neck breaking.
The plight of the innocent animals caught up in the fur trade was recently highlighted by renowned photographer by Jo-Anne McArthur on her Facebook page, We Animals. McArthur’s pioneering work has long sought to shed a light on the cruelty that animals suffer at human hands.
Foxes are very intelligent, with an excellent sense of smell and hearing. They can identify each other’s voices, and make a variety of different sounds to communicate with each other. They typically only take one mate for life, and female foxes often band together to care for and raise their young.
Sadly, foxes killed for their fur are subjected to cruel methods of capture such as steel-jaw traps, a device so painful that it has been outlawed in certain areas. So why are we subjecting these amazing animals to a life of suffering just for a coat?
You can help stop this barbaric industry. Please always choose fur-free clothing. Check out all of these awesome companies that have chosen to commit to going fur-free in their designs. And as We Animals points out, if you or someone you know has unwanted fur, consider donating it to a local wildlife shelter to help comfort orphaned animals. Together we can end the fur industry!
