Australia’s east coast is facing a devastating dual crisis: deadly flooding and a major wildlife emergency. As torrential rains pummel New South Wales, not only have at least three people died and over 500 been rescued, but a critical breeding program for Tasmanian devils is now under threat.

According to AP News, record-setting floods have engulfed towns like Port Macquarie and Taree, with some areas receiving more than 60 centimeters (2 feet) of rain. In just three days, 400mm fell on Aussie Ark, a wildlife sanctuary west of Taree, which is home to one of the country’s most important Tasmanian devil breeding programs.

As reported by the Australian Museum’s AAP, floodwaters have damaged fences, destroyed access roads, and inundated enclosures. Staff at the sanctuary waded through murky water to rescue endangered animals, including Tasmanian devils and quolls, working around the clock to relocate them to safety. “It’s a constant battle,” said Aussie Ark president Tim Faulkner, “but we are determined to keep going and protect every single animal in our care.”

This natural disaster isn’t just a weather event—it’s a wake-up call. Flooding on this scale used to be rare. Now it’s becoming terrifyingly normal, driven by climate change that intensifies weather patterns and puts both human and animal lives at risk.

If you care about wildlife, the environment, or the planet we all share, it’s time to act. Support sanctuaries like Aussie Ark, stop supporting industries that fuel the climate crisis, and consider switching to a vegan lifestyle that reduces your environmental footprint. Change begins with choices—and animals need us to choose better.
