As Hurricane Milton made its approach toward Florida, a heartbreaking discovery was made in Tampa. A defenseless dog had been left tied to a fence in rising floodwaters, abandoned to face the storm alone. Florida Highway Patrol officers, while patrolling near Interstate 75 on Wednesday morning, found the desperate animal trapped in stomach-deep water, barking for help.
Despite the difficult weather conditions, the officers acted swiftly. They stopped their vehicles and waded through the drenched terrain to reach the dog just in time. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the dog is now safe and receiving the care he needs.
After the rescue, the officers took the frightened dog to a veterinarian, who thankfully found no injuries. The dog was given a clean bill of health, and a picture shared by the department on social media showed him resting in the back of a patrol car, wrapped in a warm blanket.
The story quickly spread online, drawing both outrage and compassion. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his gratitude to the highway patrol officers and used the incident to remind Floridians about the responsibility of caring for their pets. “It is cruel for anyone to leave a dog tied to a post in the middle of an oncoming storm,” DeSantis said, adding that the state will hold anyone accountable for mistreating animals.
Following the department’s post, many people expressed interest in adopting the dog, hoping to offer him a loving forever home after his ordeal.
