Growing up, we all remember seeing commercials for cheese featuring “happy cows” or bacon ads with pigs running freely on old McDonald style farms. We were taught that animals raised for our food lead wonderful lives, and in some way, were glad to be part of the animal agriculture industry. Unfortunately, in reality, the vast majority of animals raised for food reside on factory farms where they live a daily nightmare in cramped and unsanitary conditions.
These animals are subjected to extreme mental and physical trauma and never get to experience the simple joys of good food or even fresh air during their lifetimes. It is truly tragic to know what happens to animals in the factory farm machine, but as this video posits, an alternative life is possible.
Places like Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary attempt to heal the emotional and physical scars of animal agriculture by giving rescued farm animals a safe home where they’ll never be exploited or looked at as a commodity.
Seeing the dark, sad images fade into ones filled with joy and happiness really allows us to think about how we treat animals. If we could all take a step back and learn to appreciate the value of farm animals, completely outside of their value as “commodities,” the world would be a much more compassionate place.
As Edgar’s Mission says, “If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others, why wouldn’t we?”
