Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Robert Redfield, two of the federal government’s leading experts on the coronavirus and members of the White House response team, testified before the Senate on May 12 to share their thoughts on re-opening the country and preventing the spread of coronavirus. Dr. Robert Redfield is the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Dr. Anthony Fauci is the nation’s top infectious disease expert.

Ahead of the hearing yesterday, Fauci told the New York Times, “The major message that I wish to convey to the Senate HLP committee tomorrow is the danger of trying to open the country prematurely. If we skip over the checkpoints in the guidelines to: ‘Open America Again,’ then we risk the danger of multiple outbreaks throughout the country. This will not only result in needless suffering and death, but would actually set us back on our quest to return to normal.”

During the testimony, both doctors warned against reopening the country too fast. “We are not out of the woods yet,” said Dr. Robert Redfield, “but we are more prepared.” On May 11, President Trump said, “We have met the moment, and we have prevailed.” But testimony at the Senate hearing paints a much different picture.

They urged caution and said that its unlikely a vaccine would be ready for the start of school in the fall. “If we do not respond in an adequate way when the fall comes, given that it is without a doubt that there will be infections that will be in the community, then we run the risk of having a resurgence,” Dr. Fauci said. “I would hope that by that time, in the fall, that we would have more than enough to respond adequately. But if we don’t, there will be problems.”
