They say that opposites attract. That certainly seems to be the case between this lovely interspecies duo, Penny the Silkie chicken and Roo the two-legged Chihuahua. Just how did this unlikely couple meet? Their common denominator is animal science student and Duluth Hospital receptionist Alicia Williams who saved both animals “from certain death.”
Penny was in a testing facility when Alicia rescued her. Because Silkie chickens are flock animals who need social interaction, Alicia would take nine-week-old Penny into work, making her an office regular. Not long after adopting Penny, Alicia discovered seven-week-old Roo abandoned in a park ditch. Poor Roo was born with underdeveloped front legs and was unable to walk on his own. Despite the fact that Alicia knew he would need surgery and a wheelchair, she took Roo in any way.
Penny and Roo hit it off immediately and are practically inseparable. She wheels him around and she’s a big fluffy pillow for him when they sleep. Penny knows that when Roo’s around there will always be some extra food and a chew toy or two for her to play with. Sounds like a fair exchange! This adorable duo just goes to show that love has no boundaries.
