Public health officials continue to emphasize the importance of wearing face coverings to protect against the coronavirus. As states reopen, its important to continue wearing masks to help stem the spread.

The US Surgeon General is the latest health expert to weigh in on the importance of masks. Dr. Jerome Adams said on June 14 that face coverings do not infringe on people’s freedoms. In fact, they do the opposite. Dr.  Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease experts, has made similar comments recently to encourage Americans to wear face masks.

“Some feel face coverings infringe on their freedom of choice — but if more wear them, we’ll have MORE freedom to go out,” Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams said in a tweet, “Exercise and promote your freedom by choosing to wear a face covering!”

Because people without symptoms can still transmit the coronavirus, its important that everyone wears masks to help prevent the spread of the disease. According to Johns Hopkins, there are over 2 million cases in the United States and at least 115,463 deaths as of June 14. Many states have seen recent surges in cases, which is partly why health officials continue to encourage masks.
